Well folks, we have gotten through the FIRST CrossFit Open of 2019! We are proud of our members for grinding through the 5 weeks of workouts!
Looking back, it is easy for us to beat ourselves up for not going harder, not lifting heavier, or not repeating a workout to try to get a better score. But I am here to tell you that is not what you should be focusing on. Looking back we should be focusing on the effort we put into each workout. What matters is that you put in your best effort into each of the WODs. What matters is that you left it all out on the floor and gave it everything you had. It is critical we give ourself credit for what we have accomlished and the work we put into the Open.
It’s ok if you didn’t PR any of your lifts. It’s ok if you did not get your first chest-to-bar pull-up or your first bar muscle-up. It’s ok if you did not beat the time cap. What matters is that you tried.
There is a reason a car has a small rear-view mirror and large front windshielf – it’s because what’s in front of us is much more important than what is behind us. Now, don’t get me wrong, it is important to learn from our past, hence why there is a rearview mirror in the first place. But it’s only to glance back, not focus on what is behind you.
The front windshield is larger because we must focus on what is in front of us. There will be challenges, there will be rain, thunder, and lightening. There will be speedbumps. However, we will be able to see and navigate those obstacles as long as our focus is on what is in front of us.
Having said that, this is the first year there will be a SECOND CrossFit Open happening later in the year. What does that mean? Another shot at putting it all out there, competing our little hearts out, and accomplishing movements we may have fallen short at the first time around!
Moving forward we now have a template to work with. We know the movements and areas of fitness we need to work on to get better. We know where our weaknesses lie. We know where our threshold is. Now’s the time to prepare for the next Open. Now’s the time to lay out the movements and areas of fitness you want to improve on. It’s the time to set some achievable goals and baby steps for achieving those goals. It’s time to work hard and focus on what lies in front of us.
If you need help setting goals and baby steps to achieve those goals, talk with any of the CFABQ coaches and they would love to help you. Find happiness and joy in the process. Let go of what you thought you should do or where you should be. Be proud of your effort.
