The new year is approaching quickly, and as we get ready to say goodbye to 2013 and welcome 2014, many of us may be setting some CrossFit goals for ourselves. When I look forward to my goals one of my favorite poems is “Invictus” by William Ernest Henley
Invictus
Out of the night that covers me,
Black as the Pit from pole to pole,
I thank whatever gods may be
For my unconquerable soul.
In the fell clutch of circumstance
I have not winced nor cried aloud.
Under the bludgeonings of chance
My head is bloody, but unbowed.
Beyond this place of wrath and tears
Looms but the Horror of the shade,
And yet the menace of the years
Finds, and shall find, me unafraid.
It matters not how strait the gate,
How charged with punishments the scroll.
I am the master of my fate:
I am the captain of my soul.
CFABQ has had many ups and a few downs this year. We have a wonderful core membership of athletes that come every day and work so hard. Some people may have the goal to lose weight, some to improve their health, while others have the goal to stand on the podium at the CrossFit Games. All of these goals are equally important. When I read “Invictus” the line that always stands out to me is at the very end, “I am the master of my fate: I am the captain of my soul.” When we set goals we may achieve them with smooth sailing, or, more than likely, we may hit a few bumps in the road. The true character of a person is what you do when you hit those bumps. Do you give up? Or do you work even harder to get over that bump and reach your goals? What I love about our members is we have a whole lot of people in that second group. I have never seen anyone quit something because they couldn’t do it, they may scale, take the reps down, the weight down, or whatever they need to do, but they don’t quit. That is why all of us coaches love working with each and every member of our gym.
So as the new year approaches start thinking about your CrossFit and fitness goals. Write them down, tell a friend, or tell a coach. We are here to help you achieve your goals and beyond!
Happy Holidays to everyone!
