Saturday, June 1st we will be participating in the Melissa Memorial WOD in honor of Coach Becky’s mother.
Melissa, Becky’s mother, passed away May 19, 2016 from PSP (Progressive Supranuclear Palsy), an uncommon brain disorder that affects movement, control of walking (gait) and balance, speech, swallowing, vision, mood and behavior, and thinking.
May is PSP Awareness Month. Becky and her sister, are making strides to create a bigger impact on awareness month in May for PSP and helping teach others what PSP is and the impact it has on the individual and the family.
We will be doing this WOD for the 9am Saturday class on Saturday, June 1st.
The heavy deadlifts represent the hard work Melissa put into her life, her family, gardening and home, along with the extremely heavy burden and struggle coping with PSP for a decade. The pullups: Melissa always wanted to be able to do one when she trained with Becky; furthermore, representing the way she pulled herself up every day in dealing with PSP. Burpees: Melissa always said, “keep calm and carry on” no matter what she or someone else was struggling with. She taught her daughters that no matter what knocks you down in life, you find the strength to get back up and carry on.
The number 5 represents the month of May, in which Melissa passed away. The number 6 represents the year 2006 when Melissa first started experiencing symptoms of PSP. The number 12 represents the year 2012 when Melissa was officially diagnosed with PSP. The number 16 represents the year 2016, in which Melissa passed away.
